France v Germany Current Odds

France in a rich vein of form

In the last two years, a friendly loss to Finland is France’s only defeat and coach Didier Deschamps has an incredibly talent-rich and dynamic squad. Les Bleus warmed up for Euro 2020 with four successive wins to nil against Kazakhstan, Bosnia, Wales and Bulgaria. Admittedly not the most ruthless of opposition, but flawless victories for France nonetheless.

France has strengthened their squad with the addition of Karim Benzema. But should he miss out for any reason, Olivier Giroud will lead the attack, which has worked very well for Les Bleus in the past. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are the other two members of a formidable French front three, capable of causing headaches for any defence.

France has scored in 17 of their past 19 competitive fixtures and it’s almost guaranteed at least one of these goal-scoring machines will open their account against Germany on Tuesday evening. The presence of this offensive trio up front against a German side without any top-class defenders, aside from Mats Hummels, makes the case for backing France compelling.

Ze Germans have seen better days

Since an embarrassing early exit at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Germany has had a tough three years with coach Joachim Low being harshly criticised. Die Mannschaft were walloped 6-0 by Spain in the Nations League back in November before North Macedonia handed them a 2-1 defeat in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers when things went from bad to worse.

Poor defensive displays and systematic errors have been commonplace for Germany of late with far too much tinkering being done with their formation. Nonetheless, the three-time Euro winners can call upon a depth of offensive talent with Thomas Muller set to start alongside Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane in an all-Bayern Munich attacking force.

Germany provided plenty of problems for a solid Denmark side in a Euro 2020 warm-up friendly earlier this month and will be buoyed by their goalscoring record on home soil too. Aside from a recent match against France, Germany has found the net in every game they’ve hosted since 2007, so barring a defensive nightmare, they’re always in with a shout!

Head to head statistics

France has won 14 of their 31 meetings, with the Germans claiming 10 wins and the other seven games ending in a draw. The teams last met in the 2018 UEFA Nations League when France won 2-1 at home after a 0-0 draw away in Munich.

Key players to watch

Kylian Mbappé (France): This PSG’s star’s electric pace could unsettle a German defence that looks far from convincing. He picked up a knock in the friendly against Bulgaria but should shake that off and make a start.

Ilkay Gundogan (Germany): The Manchester City midfielder has been in scintillating form. Don’t overlook Gundogan as a threat as he’s bound to make a valuable contribution to Germany’s efforts going forward.

The final word

Had this match been hosted away from Munich, the odds on France would’ve been closer to 12/10. But with homefield advantage to Germany, Les Bleus are a much more appetizing price of 2.65. The array of attacking options for France, coupled with some German defensive concerns points to an entertaining encounter which France should win.
