Loadshedding has once again reared it’s ugly head as Eskom struggles to keep the lights on. We’re going to share a few tips and tricks that punters can use to make sure their betting isn’t affected by the power outages. In this guide we’ll be giving a few general tips that punters can apply when there is loadshedding in their area.
We’ve tried to keep our tips as cost effective as possible so that punters from all income types can continue betting while the power is out.
Tips for betting during Loadshedding
Go Mobile
These days most punters are placing bets from their phones and not from devices that are reliant on constant power. If you aren’t betting on your mobile yet then you should be, almost all of the best sports betting sites in South Africa offer a good mobile site or a decent app.
If you want something a little bigger we’d suggest getting a tablet or laptop that runs off an internal battery. Pair your mobile with a cost effective data router and you’ll be sorted when the lights go out.
Get a Powerbank
Powerbanks are a cheap and effective way to power your mobile devices when the electricity is off or you’re on the go. It’s important to charge these before loadshedding so that they can be used once the power goes off. You can pick up a good powerbank for between R200 – R400, the larger the better but don’t buy something that you won’t use. We found this Rosmoss 20,000MAH powerbank to be great bang for your buck option at Takealot. Should loadshedding ease a powerbank will remain useful as an additional charger or one for on the go.

Power your router / wifi during loadshedding
Those looking to keep their router or wifi on during loadshedding can look forward to keeping high speed internet working by simply plugging in a UPS. A UPS will keep your router running for around 2-3 hours once the power goes off, so you don’t lose wifi while betting at home. The larger the UPS the longer the battery will last. These are great short term solution devices and you can pick them up for around R500. We’re running one of these and are happy with it so far.

Invest in alternatives
So you’ve got your mobile and wifi sorted but can’t watch the match due to loadshedding, we’ve all been there. Fortunately there are some alternatives available which will power your tv and dstv while the power is off. This power trolley from Geezwiz will kick in automatically and have enough juice to run a TV, PC and decoder for several hours. It comes with a price tag of around R5000, which might sound like a lot but once you’ve tasted a normal life during loadshedding you won’t regret it.

Go off the grid
Unfortunately this isn’t an option for most South Africans, but for those who can afford it going off the grid would be an excellent solution. Going off the grid means you generate and supply your own power which means you’ll have a house full of lights while everyone else suffers. As mentioned these systems are expensive but if you have the money they are well worth it.
