The below views are our own.
Japan v Russia
Hosts Japan take on Russia in the Rugby World Cup opener. The hosts have looked in good touch heading into the tournament and take on a Russian side that perhaps does not deserve to be there. The handicap for the match is a rather large 37.5 but we can’t look past the hosts giving the Russians a monumental beating. Back -37.5 against Russia.
New Zealand v South Africa
South Africa surprised many when they lifted the Rugby Championship in 2019, beating out the likes of NZ and Australia. Their form heading into their opener is fantastic, while NZ have been struggling for hit top gear. This should be a close game with NZ favored by 7.5 points, so you might be tempted to back South Africa +7.5. However we predict New Zealand will come out on top by around 10 points in a low scoring match. We fancy New Zealand to find their feet and get a good start to the World Cup. Back New Zealand -7.5 v South Africa.
Italy v Namibia
Namibia are arguably one of the weakest sides in the World Cup. They’re 23 in World rankings, compared to Italy’s rank of 13, which by itself tells us there is a huge gap in skill. The Namibians will play their heart out no doubt, but Italy traditionally have a strong 1st half and ease off in the 2nd half. We fancy Italy to cover the half time -14.5 Handicap and the full time -28.5 handicap with ease.
England v Tonga
We’ll start off by saying England will have no trouble getting past Tonga, and the handicap of 34.5 reflects this. However we feel this is a little on the high side as Tonga are known as scrappers and England might struggle to get going if they are bogged down. It’ll be a one sided affair but we’re leaning towards Tonga +34.5.
