Russia opened their World Cup campaign with a massive 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia last Thursday. The hosts will be headed into this match on cloud nine. It might seem like an easy game for Russia but their 5-0 win over Saudi was very deceiving. Saudi did not play as badly as the scoreline suggests but Russia pounced on their mistakes and made them pay. In all honestly the game should have been a 2-0 win for Russia were it not for those mistakes. Russia can’t rely on Egypt gifting them the same kind of chances and they know a win against the visitors would guarantee them a place in the Round of 16.
Egypt were lucky and unlucky in their first game against Uruguay. They defended well and got bodies behind the ball while looking to hit Uruguay on the counter attack. This worked for around 80min before the Uruguayan pressure became too much and the Egyptians conceded. It was a fair result but one has to admire the performance they put in to only lose 1-0. Another thing Egypt have going for them is the certain return of Salah, the striker did not feature in the Uruguay game and one thinks that the result would have been different had he been on the field.

Russia cannot afford to be complacent after their win over Saudi, especially when facing a Egyptian side that will have Salah back in its ranks. We expect Russia to do most of the attacking with Egypt sitting deep, looking to strike on the counter attack down the wings. Salah will also have a massive influence on the squads moral and Egypt will be confident that they can get a result. Russia are the bookmakers favourites at 5/4, a line worth backing but we aren’t buying into the hype just yet.
Egypt will be a challenge to overcome as they will be looking to pick up at least a point to stand a chance of qualifying. We don’t see there being too many goals in this one, and the unders are priced at a paltry 11/20, so it’s not really worth getting involved there. Instead we’re going to be backing the Egyptians to get a result against the hosts. Our call is Egypt Double Chance (Win/Draw) at 13/20. Yes it’s a little short but Egypt will tell us how good this Russian side really is.
